Sacred Art, Louis XV, XVIII

Gilt and polychrome wooden statue of the Immaculate Conception.

Free from original sin, the Immaculate Virgin is depicted with her attributes:
• The crescent moon reflecting the light of Christ, a sign of purity
• The serpent—symbol of evil—trampled beneath her feet
• The crown, representing heavenly queenship
• The scepter, a sign of spiritual power, protection, and the Messianic legitimacy of Jesus

The calm, serene air of the Christ Child echoes the gentle face of the Virgin. The Messiah is depicted as *Salvator Mundi* (Savior of the World), holding the Earth in one hand and blessing human creation with the other.

The Virgin stands upon a base featuring the blue terrestrial globe flanked by the faces of two *putti*.

Of exceptional craftsmanship, the flowing drapery of Christ’s mother suggests her ascent above the clouds. Great attention to detail is evident in both the hands and the faces. The colors remain remarkably fresh.

Likely originally commissioned for a convent chapel dedicated to the Immaculate Conception.

18th century.
