Sacred Art, Renaissance, XVIII

Important lectern with eagle in gilded and polychrome wood.

The golden eagle with the stern gaze and outstretched wings rests on a large hand-carved sphere. Between its talons the biblical serpent, symbol of evil, is defeated.

It rests on an imposing carved and lacquered base.

With an articulated wrought iron grip handle to allow lateral pivoting.

He has these candle sticks in order to practice the office in the darkness of the religious building.

The eagle is the animal symbol of Saint John the Evangelist (called the Eagle of Patmos, named after the Greek island where, under house arrest, he wrote his epistles and the book of Revelation).

An extraordinary lectern no doubt commissioned by the churchwarden of an important parish under the Ancien Régime.
