Chest, Renaissance, XVII

A privateer's safe made in Germany, in the Nuremberg region.

Made of wrought iron, it is polychrome on the front, sides, and hinged lid.

The decoration features floral motifs, foliate scrolls, and floral patterns typical of Dutch polychrome decoration applied to these German safes.

The key opens an ingenious and robust five-bolt mechanism. This mechanism is covered by a finely chiseled plate depicting mandarin figures.

The safe has an additional security feature: a bar that blocks the opening and a padlock (later added).

It rests on a stand.

17th century.
